Shotgun Messiah
fuckin' rocks big time! Or at least they did once... They're a GREAT late
80s/early 90s band that, that in my opinion, just didn't have enough time to get
as much recognition as they deserved. The first time I was turned on to them
was when I picked up a "Turn It Up & Pass It On-Free Metal Sampler" cassette
(vol. 9, 1992). They were the only band on it I liked but it was only one song,
and I wasn't the kind of person to buy a whole album just for a single song at
the time. Well December `97 I found their debut album (still with the promo
sticker in it) for only $4 so I figured what the hell..... IT ROCKED BALLZ! I
loved it! But wait....it didn't have the "Heartbreak Blvd." on it that I liked
from the sampler cassette. It, from that point on, was a MUST HAVE. It took a
while but when I was waiting to get into the Sebastian Bach show in Orlando, I
strolled into the Virgin Megastore across the way. There it was, the almighty
"Second Coming," and on sale too! Double bonus! *Cha-ching* It was mine! Zinny
was gone, Tim Tim (now just Tim Skold) was singing, and Bobby Lycon took Tim's
place as bassist. I swear, I must've played that CD 100 times in the first
week. It's still one of my favorites today.
There're two more
SM albums out there called "I Want More" and "Violent New Breed," but in my
opinion, the first two are the best. But alas, all good things come to an end
in these days of hip hop and alterni-crap so there is no more Shotgun Messiah.
Tim Skold attempted his own solo career, ironically named "SKOLD," and he tried
making industrial music and working with bands like KMFDM. When KMFDM split up,
he stayed with someone from the band and formed MDFMK. This guy can spit out
band names for days, can't he? I guess whatever gets the bills paid...... Now
he recently replaced Twiggy Ramirez as bassist for Marilyn Manson. At least
it's a step in the right direction.
My latest Shotgun
Messiah news is about their first singer, Zinny. He's got a new incarnation of
The Zan Clan and from what I've heard, it's like taking a trip in the way-back
machine. It rules! The creator of shotgun-messiah.com filled me in that he
should have a new Zan Clan site up around mid to late November and there will be
a new album out this Winter followed up with a tour. He also said that the band
has contributed to a Cheap Trick tribute album with "Surrender" which sounds
amazing. I can't wait to hear it!
